| Abstract: | An improved process for the preparation of aluminosilicate gel useful for the manufacture of detergent grade zeolite which comprises adding 1.18 kg of commercial water glass having 36.9% SiO2, 15.5% Na2O and 47.6% H2O to 2.24 L of 2N NaOH solution and mixing for 10 to 15 minutes at ambient temperature, dissolving commercial sodium aluminate powder to get sodium aluminate solution containing 120-130 g Na2O/L and 100 to 104 g Al2O3 /L and adding caustic soda in water followed by the addition of sodium aluminate solution into the sodium silicate solution at ambient temperature within 60 to 100 minutes, with constant addition rate and continuous stirring to form aluminosilicate gel having the composition 3.2-3.3 Na2O : 1.0 Al2O3 : 1.75-1.85 SiO2 : 90-95 H2O, subsequently the entire reaction mixture is stirred at a temperature of 90-950C for 45 to 75 minutes, cooled and the crystalline product is filtered off, washed to remove excess alkali and dried to obtain detergent grade zeolite which has composition 0.9-1.0 Na2O : 1.0 Al2O3 : 1.75-1.85 SiO2 : 4.5 H2O with uniform and small (50% < 4?m) particle size and calcium binding capacity of at least 275 mg CaCO3 /g zeolite. |
