| Abstract: | To assess the relative compaction of compacted soils, conventional methods viz. core cutter and sand replacement methods are generally used. These conventional methods are time consuming, laborious and also create week areas in the compacted fill. Nuclear density gauges which are non destructive in nature are available in the market. In the presence of magnetic substance, these nuclear density gauges gives erratic readings. Apart from this, calibration of this equipment is very complex and there is a fear of health hazard. The limitation of these conventional methods could be overcome by development of Non-destructive, faster and potable equipment. In the present study, an effort is made to develop and fabricate a Non-nuclear and non destructive density gauge which measures the penetration resistance of the soil compacted at different densities. Penetration probe with cone at the it's tip, is an important part of the equipment, whose specifications have been designed considering the maximum resistance of compacted soil. A system has been designed where in, the penetration probe moves in a linear direction along the lead screw with the help of chain and sprocket system and penetrates the compacted soil. A Proximity sensor is provided to measure the linear displacement of the probe and Limit switches are provided for auto stop/cut off the electric motor after required displacement of the penetration probe. A digital display unit is attached for display of maximum penetration resistance of compacted soil and linear movement of penetration probe. Different parts have been assembled and fabricated to develop an Electro-mechanical soil density gauge. |
