Abstract: A single step process for the preparation of barium gluconate which comprises: fermenting a carbohydrate, as defined herein, by mediation of a fungal strain preferably Aspergillus niger which is capable of oxidising the carbohydrates, in presence of a conventional fermentation medium containing barium salt, at a temperature in the range of 20 to 40°C, for a period at least 16hr followed by separating the cell mass by the method such as herein described and recovering the barium gluconate by conventional crystallization method.
