| Abstract: | A Benthic Mesocosm Experiment Device (BMED) Coral calcification, respiration and photosynthesis are a measure of coral growth, which is important for healthy reef ecosystems. The standard method for measuring coral calcification involves staining a live coral colony using alizarin red dye. However, this method involves sacrificing the animal at the end of the study, which is prohibited in India (Wildlife protection act 1972). Therefore, the present invention titled a benthic mesocosm experiment device (BMED) [Fig 1] is designed to incubate the corals in-situ in their natural environment and assess their calcification rate based on the changes in the alkalinity and calcium ion concentration in the incubated seawater. The device includes a benthic chamber [3] which provides an enclosure that allows the corals to be incubated in a controlled but natural environment and an electronics hull [11] to control, store and process the data. |
