| Abstract: | The present invention discloses a solid catalyst of Formula NbnX/MO2 where n = 1 or 2, X = O5 or OPO4, M = Ti or Zr and its use as acid catalyst for the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from various C6 carbohydrates streams such as fructose, glucose, glucose:fructose mixture, sucrose, inulin, cellobiose and cellulose in a 1:1 to 3:1 (dimethyl carabonate: water) w/w biphasic system. The NbnX/MO2 catalyst produces 5-hydroxymethylfurfural at a higher conversion rate, selectivity and yields. NbnX/MO2 is suitable for use in a batch as well as flow reactor and maintains its original performance upon successive recycling and/or regeneration. |
