Abstract: The present disclosure provides a process of conversion from methanol to formaldehyde in presence of ZnO nanocatalyst. Most  interestingly, in the presence of ZnO, the MeOH gets converted to formaldehyde at ambient conditions. The present invention  explores the (101 ?1) facet of ZnO to understand its interaction with methanol using periodic density functional theory (DFT). The  present invention discloses the spontaneous conversion of methanol to formaldehyde at this facet as thermodynamically the most  favorable outcome. After formation, formaldehyde desorbs from the surface. Methanol converts to formaldehyde at room temperature  and atmospheric pressure with 100% selectivity.
