Abstract:
Plastic production rate is at an all time high due to low  manufacturing costs and versatility in application. Plastic is not biodegradable under normal circumstances and its accumulation in nature has led to pollution of the  environment. Consequently, there has been a pressing need for new strategies to mitigate plastic degradation problem. Present investigation deals with the  microorganism-based process for the conversion of plastics to calcite or calcium carbonate. In the present invention, a novel marine bacterial strain has been isolated  from polluted coast of Versova beach, Mumbai, India and assessed their competence for plastic degradation using modified MPN method. It was identified that  Alkali halo bacillus lehensis AF2 can efficiently degrade different types of plastics. It can consume 1g of any type of plastic (LDPE, HDPE, PP and PET) in 35 days.  From 1g of plastic consume by bacteria, approximately 0.5g of calcite would be formed.
