| Abstract: | Downstream processing of seaweed-biomass for the production of commercially, important phycocolloids (e.g. agar/agarose, carrageenan) generates potassium, humins (carbon-based substances) and agro-nutrients (micro & macro) rich dark coloured basic liquid effluent (PHR-BLE) as well as huge amount of residual solid seaweed waste (RSSW). The present invention provides a process for the formation of solid and/or gel like biostimulants from PHR-BLE with concomitant environmental remediation of effluent. The process involves pre- treatment of PHR-BLE with desired nature of acids (~100% remediation) to induce desired agro-nutrients such as nitrogen, sulphur, potassium, silicon, boron, etc. It may further be possible for the seaweed processing industries to achieve ZLD status by utilizing residual solid seaweed waste (RSSW) for the production of biodegradable thin films, packaging sheets, pots, designs, articles, etc. for wider environmental applications. |
