Abstract:
Microwave (MW) heating has emerged as a unique technology for processing wide variety of materials. It has already been applied for industrial use. However, melting of glass using microwave heating is relatively new development and is being tested in producing glass in laboratory scale. Various glass systems within temperature range 1200-1500 degree Celcius adopting MW heating has been carried out as an alternative heating route. The glass systems comprising SiO2, B2O3, P2O5 as the main building block in glass matrix for different special applications have been melted. Small scale glass melting in microwave heating requires much less electrical energy saving 50-75% energy. Total glass melting time is also reduced drastically owing to higher heating rate and volumetric heating. OH concentration is found to be lower in barium borosilicate and zinc borate glasses prepared by microwave heating. Retention of higher Fe2+ in microwave heating can have potential application in developing IR absorbing glass.
