Title:

A Process of Producing Bio-bitumen from Pyrolysis of Lignocellulosic Biomass

Value Proposition:

To pyrolyse lignocellulosic biomass to produce bio-oil for bio-bitumen/bio-binder, bio-char for soil amendment and pyro-gas for energy applications.

Summary Application:

Simultaneous production of bio-oil, biochar and pyro-gas in a single process without any use of inert carrier gas.

  • Unique Process and no competing process for production of 3 products suitable for various applications.
  • Rice straw as a feedstock without any pretreatment can be used for process in the form of pellets.
  • CSIR-IIP, CSIR-CRRI with the support of M/s. Sekura Pvt. Limited, and, NHAI, Ministry of Road, Transport and Highway (MoRTH), Government of India, has successfully demonstrated the field trail of bio-bitumen (produced from Rice straw) for the construction of 90 meter road on National High-6, Jorabat to Shillong (Barapani) Section on 26th October 2024.
Advantages:

The bio-binder shall be produced from renewable materials such as rice straw. The equipment required for the production of bio-binder can be fabricated indigenously. The as produced bio-binder can be blended with conventional bitumen up to 20%. It might minimize the reliance on imports and saves the forex. The products from the pyrolysis process namely biochar and pyro-gas may be utilized for soil amendment and energy application, respectively.
