Abstract:
The present invention relates to a gelatin foam having water-solubility, light-weight(? = 0.25g/cm3), high porosity(F=70%), and mechanical stability(compressive modulus =3 MPa), which is prepared by mixing gelatin granules with water and a blowing  agent, and heating the resulting mixture. This foaming occurred due to the decomposition of the blowing agent, which produces CO2 and causes the plasticized gelatin  matrix to expand. The said foaming process is further facilitated by the open reaction vessel, which allows the moisture and CO2 to dissipate, leaving behind a  mechanically stable foam. These foams can be used as foam packing peanuts for packaging applications, which effectively occupy vacant areas and offer protective  cushioning, ensuring the safety of fragile items during transportation.
