 Technology Profile

Title:

Agro-technology of Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii)

Value Proposition:

Gerbera ranks among top ten cut flowers in the international market. In India, most of the Gerbera cultivars in trade are imported for commercial cultivation. Gerbera is suitable for protected cultivation in plains, low and mid hills.

Summary Application:

Five cultivars were developed through hybridization and selection approach for commercial cultivation. The cultivars have standard flower size, double and semi-double flower heads and bright colours such as light yellow (Him Saumya), red purple (Him Gaurav), yellow orange (Him Aabha), red bicolour (Him Apoorva) and bright yellow (Him Keerti). The yield of flowers in cultivars is more than 20 flowers/plant/year and are as per the flower colour preference in the market.

Advantages:
  • The technology is positioned for import substitution of Gerbera cultivars from abroad

  • Tissue culture as well as nursery production protocols are available for Gerbera varieties

  • Vase life of cut flowers is more than 12 days

  • In vitro cultures to tissue culture firms for mass multiplication

  • Training on agro-technology practices
