Title:

An Energy Efficient Water-cooled Condenser type Air Conditioner

Value Proposition:
A Water cooled AC is developed as an alternative to window/split AC in the range of 1 to 2.5 Tr. The novel liquid to refrigerant heat exchanger design resulted in improvement of COP by 30%. The system is also applicable for multi tenant/ multi flat high rise buildings with the multi-unit configuration with single condenser. The following are the salient features of this technology
Summary Application:

Currently for multi conditioned room apartments / multi-tenant applications and high rise buildings where the cooling load is in the range of 5 to 10 ToR for each flat, multiple units of AC's are installed. These multiple units are installed in recessed spaces, which are formed in the individual flats and due to lack of proper ventilation in these areas, the COP of the AC's are reduced significantly while also causing heat island effect. Similarly this cooling requirement range also cannot be addressed with centralized AC’s as they are not economical for small tonnage capacity (< 100 ToR) and also cannot work efficiently due to part loading. To address this gap, the developed design is very economical and highly suitable for multi conditioned room apartments / multi-tenant applications even with 1 to 10 ToR capacity cooling load requirements with single outdoor unit, but can be easily scaled upto very large tonnage capacity. Further, the design the proposed system shall also address the following advantages:

• A single condenser shall replace multiple outdoor units thus avoiding heat island effect in buildings and its surroundings.
• Due to higher heat capacity of water and significant improvement of heat transfer coefficient of water to refrigerant heat exchanger the improvement in the overall efficiency of the system shall result in reduction of power rating capacity of the compressor unit for same heat load resulting in a small and compact and making the system economical.
• The system offers flexibility as it can be operated as a centralized AC or individual mode as per user requirements.

• The system has no condensation problems and does not require laying of any specialized pipe laying inside buildings, unilike a centralized AC where there is a requirement of laying of refrigerant line or high pressure cold water line and causes condensation problems.
• The system generates hot water also for bathing / kitchen applications.
• The system can be operated in geo-thermal mode enabling geo thermal cooling especially applicable for composite climatic zone.
• It can utilize recycled water from waste water treatment plants.

Advantages:
  • No de-rating in higher ambient summer temperatures resulting in power savings - Prevents heat island effect (does not reject heat into neighbors surroundings).
  • Less maintenance as minimal Refrigerant line / No Chilled Water pressure line.
  • Supplies hot water for domestic applications (potentially replacing Geysers).
  • Geo Thermal Cooling (Significant COP rise due to low rejection temperature).
  • Can use recycled water also for heat exchange.
