Abstract:
The present invention is an integrated process for the preparation of alpha-campholenic aldehyde with recovery of elemental iodine. alpha-Campholenic aldehyde is  used as an industrially prominent perfumery chemical and as a synthetic intermediate for those with a Sandalwood perfume and also as some pharmaceuticals. More  specifically, the present invention relates to a process for the clean and scalable production of alpha-campholenic aldehyde in high yield using freshly prepared ZnI2 as  catalyst in non-polar aprotic solvent such as toluene. This process also discloses the recovery of elemental iodine from the reaction mixture.
