Abstract:
A substantial amount of residual mass is left over during the  industrial processing of alginate seaweeds. The industries that process seaweed face significant difficulties in treating or disposing of such residual mass. The  production of a bioactive extract and nanocrystalline cellulose as a value-added product from alginate industry residues was demonstrated in this work using an  integrated approach. After processing the residues, 8.37 to 8.67% of bioactive extract were produced, containing 5.1–5.6% of total phenolic content (TPC), around 48– 51% of proteins (49% essential amino acid), and 40–42% of fucoidans. The bioactive extract also demonstrated a significant level of antioxidant activity. Additionally,  8.71–9.67% nanocrystalline cellulose was produced, with crystals measuring 2-79 nm in diameter and a 79% crystallinity index (Crl). The study makes the case that  waste from the alginate industries could be used as a raw material for manufacturing value-added products for nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical  applications.
