| Abstract: | The present invention provides an integrated process for colour removal from red water produced during manufacturing of high energy explosives such as TNT and RDX. The invented process includes two stages, namely chemical coagulation and adsorption. The colour causing chemicals in red water are coagulated using a novel mixture of aqueous organic acids. During coagulation, about 50-60% of colour is removed and about 3.8 - 4.7% of sludge is generated. The treated coloured solution in the chemical coagulation stage is contacted with graphene nanocomposite (GN) or activated carbon (AC)for complete removal of colour from red water through adsorption. This synergistic and integrated system removes 99.9% of colour from red water. The treated water is reusable for industrial and domestic Applications. The sludge generated during coagulation and spent GN or AC can be used in the preparation of graphene and activated carbon, as value-added materials. This integrated process follows zero liquid discharge principle and adapts circular economy concept. |
