Title:

Biogas Generation from Organic Wastes

Value Proposition:

Biogas Generation from Food Waste, Vegetable Peels, and Fruit Peels

Summary Application:

Kitchen waste is one of the most inevitable wastes generated daily. Also, food wastage is a global problem. It is reported that almost one-third of the food produced is being wasted. Most of the organic waste generated in the country is either being dumped into landfills or sent to piggeries. With this technology, food waste from the canteen and vegetable/ fruit peels from the kitchen can generate bio-energy under the circular economy concept.

Advantages:
  • This technology is meant for cafeterias, hotels, and canteens to manage an organic fraction of their waste.
  • Generated biogas can be used directly for cooking or electrical energy generation.
  • The digestate can be used as organic manure.
  • The pilot scale demonstration plant capacity of 500 kg/day has been funded by DBT, GoI under the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’  and implemented at BS Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology, Vandalur, Chennai.
  • Co-digestion studies indicated that the biogas yield observed was 0.7 to 0.9 m3/kg of VSdestructed.
