 Technology Profile

Title:

Bricks and Blocks from Fly Ash, Red Mud, Crusher Dust and Mineral/Mining Wastes

Value Proposition:

Brick manufactured by using our technology is as per BIS code IS 12894 : 2002 and this technology is  a tailor made technology so the strength can be controlled as per requirement which is a user friendly technology. The manufacturing cost of brick is  Rs.2.50 to Rs.3.00 by using our technology.

Bond material developed by CSIR-IMMT is used 12%-16% by weight of the fly ash mix for manufacturing of brick.

  1.  The process is flexible to use any types of fly ash (42-70%) along with bond and locally available waste materials including sand, stone dust, etc.
  2.  The brick requires only 2 to 3 times of water curing in 3 days of interval from date of manufacturing. From 7th-10th day of manufacturing, the brick is ready for sale.
  3.  It is possible to adopt hydraulic, vibration cum hydraulic, vibration cum hand mould press for manufacture of brick.
  4. The cost of bond material for a brick of 230x110x75 mm size may range Rs1.20 to Rs.1.40-depending on the quality of fly ash and other additives materials.

We provide the composition of chemical bond material which will be used for brick making. The chemical for bond material is readily available in the market.

Presently, this process has been transferred to 23 entrepreneurs in the country on non-exclusive basis for manufacture of bricks ranging from 10,000 to 2, 00,000 bricks/day.

Summary Application:

A mineral polymerization technology has been developed for effective utilization of different materials and waste resources like, fly and bottom ash, red mud, crusher dust, slag etc. to address the issues of environmental pollution. The approach adopts non-fired green route and has the potential in making products like building bricks, blocks, tiles etc. for construction industry. The process feature involves a chemical transformation of oxides of iron, alumina, Lime and silica bearing mineral constituents of the materials in formation of hydrous silicate structures which follows a pathway of gel formation and solidification where the product gains binding strength.

Advantages:

Brick manufactured by using our technology conforms to BIS code IS 12894 : 2002.
