Title:

Development of Patient-Specific Orthopaedic & Maxillofacial Implants

Value Proposition:

Patient-Specific Implants (PSI) also known as custom Implants are developed on the “One Implant One Patient” Philosophy. It is required when available implants are not able to provide a solution optimally or altogether implants are not available for a specific requirement, due to which the patient can be crippled or bedridden for life. These are custom designed using the patient's own CT-Scan data, which can also reduce the stress shielding effect generated by conventional implants. Since these implants are pre-contoured, they provide a good fit and faster recovery. These are manufactured with biocompatible alloys using additive manufacturing.

Summary Application:

The maxillofacial region occupies the most prominent position in the human body, being usually highly vulnerable to injuries. There are changes in patterns of facial injuries, extent, clinical features, etc., resulting in mild-to-massive disfigurement of the maxillofacial skeleton, along with functional loss. Management of injuries in the maxillofacial complex remains a challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, demanding both skill and a high level of expertise. There are various orthopedic areas also for which standard implants are not available, as well as in trauma cases where standard implants cannot be used e.g. pelvis and implants requiring revision surgery. Patient-specific implants developed from CT/MRI data of patients can be of great use. Custom implant for bone cancer/fungal infection patients is also of great importance, as with the custom fabrication technique, joint salvaging implants can be developed.

Advantages:
  • Designed using patient's own CT-Scan data, pre-contoured providing better fit.
  • Less bone removal required for implantation
  • With the possibility of integration of lattice structures for bone ingrowth providing biological fixation.
  • Joint salvaging implants
