| Abstract: | Electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is a non-contact non-destructive method of generation and detection of ultrasonic waves in electrically conducting or magnetic materials. The presence of residual stresses may result in the premature failure and sometimes may result in dangerous accidents. Currently used method for the detection and estimation of residual stresses in the material by using EMAT is by generating a polarized shear waves in particular plane and the ultrasonic velocity is measured. Then the plane of polarization is rotated by 90? just by rotating the transducer and again ultrasonic velocity is measured. The difference in the two propagation velocities is related to the presence residual stresses. Present Invention provides EMAT which generates two orthogonally polarized shear waves simultaneously in the test material by single coil. The superimposed signal received by the same coil has information about the fast and slow velocities used to estimate residual stress present. Figure 1 (a) and ( b). |
