| Abstract: | Natural fibres especially coir fibres which are hard and of large diameter, having large bulk density which are sustainable and no-toxic, can be utilized as a suitable replacement for mineral fibres for obtaining good sound absorption coefficient particularly at mid to low frequencies. In the present process dealing with the preparation of low -density acoustic panels from coir/polymer systems using different layers of coir mats, needle felt or geotextile or in combination with epoxy binder in presence of amine curing and silyl modifier system. These panels are flame resistant and with a tunable noise reduction coefficient with a film thickness of 20-50mm with air cavity or surface layer with porous polymer or ceramic layer. These hybrid coir composites produced with NF or GT coir mats having tailor-made sound absorption, thickness, density, and physical properties showed prospects for applications as cost-effective, acoustic panels for noise control in rooms. Coir fibres based acoustic panels with thermoset polymer binders with tunable noise reduction coefficient of 0.70 - 0.82 as per ASTM C384-04, and flame resistance of V-0 under UL94 test with a density of 90-180 kg/m3 which are cost-effective and ecofriendly were prepared in the present study. |
