| Abstract: | A method to form a high softening point coal tar -petroleum hybrid pitch (302). The method includes mixing a toluene solvent (104) with a dehydrated coal tar (102) to filter a Toluene Insoluble (TI) from the dehydrated coal tar (102) and form a TI-free coal tar (106). The method further includes mixing a petroleum derived feedstock (108) with the TI-free coal tar (106), to form a coal tar ? petroleum mixture (110). The method further includes heating the coal tar ? petroleum mixture (110) at a first temperature for a first period, under a purging of inert gas at a first flow rate, to form a precursor pitch (202). The method further includes heating the precursor pitch (202) at a second temperature for a second period, under a purging of air at a second flow rate, to form the high softening point coal tar ? petroleum hybrid pitch (302). |
