Title:

Industrially Viable Indigenous Process for Catalogued Specialty Chemical Pyrilium Ions and Novel Variants

Value Proposition:

Pyrylium ions demonstrate widespread applications; from valuable synthons to photoredox catalysis, fluorescent probes, photosensitizers, Q-switchers, laser dyes, organic luminophores and solar cells. The main limitations of the existing methods are low yields, tedious separation process and only symmetrical pyrylium ions can be synthesized in a single-step reaction. To address these issues, at CSIR-NIIST, we have developed a simplified, one-pot direct synthesis process for the production of symmetrical and unsymmetrical pyrylium ions. The process explores indigenously available key starting materials with reaction parameters suitable for industrial-scale applications. The notable invention in the process is to produce a diverse library of novel variants of pyrylium ions via the one-pot process. This technology presents significant market potential both domestically and globally, offering Indian industries the opportunity to produce speciality chemicals indigenously.

Summary Application:

Pyrylium ions are versatile compounds with applications in:

  • Photoredox Catalysis: Enabling advanced chemical transformations.
  • Fluorescent Probes: For biological and chemical sensing.
  • Photosensitizers: Used in photodynamic therapy and imaging.
  • Q-Switchers and Laser Dyes: Critical components in laser technology.
  • Organic Luminophores: For light-emitting devices and displays.
  • Solar Cells: Enhancing efficiency in renewable energy solutions.
Advantages:

• Cost-effective one-pot scale-up process for the production of catalogued pyrylium ions.

• Cost-effective one-pot scale-up process for the production of a newly designed library of novel variants of pyrylium ions.

• Indigenous process technology to facilitate the Indian market requirement.

• Large library of pyrylium ions which can open new avenues in specialty chemicals viz. phtoredox catalysis, fluorescent imaging, cell biology, solar cell processing etc.
