| Abstract: | Leather Like Composites from Agricultural Biomass and Rubber Latex and a Process for the preparation thereof The present invention describes a process for developing a leather material composite utilizing agricultural biomass such as pineapple leaves, banana pseudostem, sugarcane bagasse, rice straw, coffee husk etc. and rubber latex. The developed process aims to provide a sustainable, eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional leather by employing a multi-step process comprising alkali pulping, optional bleaching, cellulose homogenization using twin-disc refining, high shear latex mixing, Infrared drying, micro-thinning, Infrared (IR) curing, surface coating, embossing, and polishing. The key advantages of the process are utilization of agricultural waste, reduced processing time and effluents, avoidance of hazardous chemicals used in leather tanning, and lower production costs. The invention provides an environmentally responsible and commercially viable plant-based alternative for diverse leather applications. |
