Abstract: The present invention relates to the hydrogel technology for removal of micropollutants present in industrial effluent as well as for  agricultural use to improve soil moisture retention capacity with zero toxicity issues. The bioabsorbent gels are developed from paper- pulp industry waste, lignin. It involves radical polymerization of alkali lignin with a polyacrylate of ammonium cation and a  crosslinking agent. This semisynthetic gel absorbs with 5000-11000% of water and can release up to 95% of water to the soil. The  maximum efficiency has been observed with gel particle size ranging from 60 microns to 2 mm. The lig-polyacrylate gel is beneficial,  for example, in industrial effluent treatment by adsorbing toxic chemical dyes, heavy metal ions, and other contaminants, as well as in  germination of seedlings, prevention of water and agrochemical leaching, and improvement in plant growth and yield. It is also  applicable to supply water to potted ornamental plants, and home gardens.
