| Abstract: | Fire accidents resulting in fatalities and property losses are a major concern worldwide. Traditional fire alarm systems based on smoke and infrared heat detectors display delayed fire warnings and are susceptible to outside intervention. The present invention provides a fire alarm device with a temperature-sensitive element made of shape memory polyurethane reinforced with MAX filler. When exposed to a threshold temperature, typically its glass transition temperature (~57o C), the element returns to its original shape and retains it even after subsequent cooling, triggering a self-holding alarm signal by closing the electrodes. The fire alarm can be reset mechanically by stretching the element or by using two-way shape memory polymers through reheating to a lower temperature threshold. Suitable shape memory polymers include pristine shape memory polyurethane and shape memory polyurethane-Ti3AlC2 MAX phase materials composite. |
