 Technology Profile

Title:

Mag-Al Spinel Refractory Aggregates

Value Proposition:

The Mg–Al refractory technology developed and patented by CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute (Indian Patent Nos. 215810, 265435, 366743) offers three types of high-performance refractory aggregates for critical high-temperature operations in the iron and steel industry. The technology enables controlled formation of spinel-rich microstructures, resulting in improved resistance to thermal, mechanical, and chemical degradation. This translates to longer campaign life, reduced maintenance frequency, and improved process stability. The technology is designed for industrial scalability and adaptability, making it suitable for both shaped and unshaped refractory products, thereby offering refractory manufacturers and end-users a cost-effective pathway to enhance performance without major process modifications.

Summary Application:

The developed Mg–Al refractory aggregates are suitable for a wide range of high-temperature and high-wear applications, particularly in iron and steelmaking operations, including:

  1. Steel ladles (working lining and safety lining)
  2. Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) linings
  3. Secondary steelmaking units (e.g., RH degasser, ladle furnace)
  4. Tundish and metal handling systems
  5. Other high-temperature zones exposed to basic or corrosive slags
  6. The products using this technology are applicable in the form of both shaped and unshaped refractories
Advantages:
  1. Enhanced slag corrosion resistance due to stable spinel phase formation
  2. Improved thermal shock resistance, reducing crack formation and spalling
  3. Higher thermo-mechanical strength at elevated temperatures
  4. Extended service life, leading to reduced downtime and maintenance costs
  5. Industrial adaptability, enabling easy integration into existing manufacturing and application practice
