| Abstract: | The common methods of manufacturing silica include wet methods and fused methods. In the fused method, a conventional fusion of silica sand and sodium carbonate is carried out at around 1400oC. Alternatively, gaseous silicon-containing chemicals such as silicon tetra chloride are burnt in the presence of oxygen at around 1000oC to produce nano-particles of silicon dioxide. Both these processes are energy-intensive and generally require large investments. On the other hand, precipitated silica is produced through digestion and precipitation reactions involving the dissolution of silica from rice husk ash (RHA) in molten sodium carbonate or alkali hydrolysis in conventional reactors followed by controlled neutralization of digested silica in concentrated sulfuric or hydrochloric or carbonic acids or CO2 gas. The existing precipitated silica processes utilize large quantities of acid/alkali which generate huge waste streams in the RHA extraction process and require elaborate treatment. |
