| Abstract: | Method for enhancing the bearing capacity of existing structures using steel fiber reinforced grout column Structures can lead to failure by excessive total or differential settlement as well as by bearing failure. Apart from these, failure can be attributed to non- uniform nature of subsoil or loading pattern, seismic activity including liquefaction, scouring of subsoil, rotational slip of embankment and subsoil, lateral movement of subsoil due to nearby excavation etc. For structural footings, the total settlement/deformation is limited to 75mm. Any settlement exceeding these limits will affect the serviceability of the structure. Arresting these deformations post construction without disturbing the structure is one of the extremely difficult tasks. In the present invention a new post construction ground improvement technique for the existing foundations using steel fiber reinforced inclined compaction grout columns was developed. It improves the overall load bearing characteristics of foundation. This will also be beneficial for treating the subsoil of existing structures requiring more imposed loads during the lifetime compared to the original design loads as well as the existing structures undergoing excessive settlement or bearing failure of subsoil due to improper design or construction. This also helps in mitigating liquefaction risks for loose alluvial deposits. Fig. 1 |
