Novel Cost Effective Surficial Geometric Imperfection Measurement Device

Value Proposition:

The developed technology provides a cost-effective, portable, and non-contact laser-based solution for accurate quantification of surficial geometric imperfections in structural and construction materials. By enabling high-precision imperfection measurement, the system supports realistic structural performance assessment, improved quality control, expedited manufacturing, and compliance with international engineering and quality standards.

Summary Application:

The technology is applied for precise measurement and characterization of local geometric imperfections in building and engineering materials such as cold-formed light gauge steel sections, bamboo culms, and 3D concrete printed surfaces. The measured imperfection data can be directly incorporated into numerical modelling and structural analysis, facilitating material grading, quality assurance, realistic prediction of failure modes, and development of improved structural design methodologies.
