 Technology Profile

Title:

Orbital Eye Ball Implant

Value Proposition:

Functional and cosmetic rehabilitation (in which implanted artificial eye can almost exactly mimic that of healthy eye) of huge numbers of ailing single-eyed patients in India.

Summary Application:
  • High cost and affordability of devices by common people is a major concern since the industry is highly fragmented and dominated by imports with almost 80-85% of demand met through imports
  • 60-70 lakh blind among them 40-50% are single-eyed
  • Currently no indigenous technology available
Advantages:

Light weight, highly porous orbital implants made using bioactive material hydroxyapatite. The implant comes in different sizes to suit different patients. Implants are made highly porous using innovative and economical process developed by CSIR-CGCRI. The high porosity of the implant enables tissue in-growth thereby provides natural eye movement that is synchronized with other normal eye.
