Abstract: A preamplifier with multi-selectable gain and bandwidth for acoustic emission signal is provided with five switches to select appropriate gain and bandwidth for the input signal. This is particularly designed for low amplitude (in the range of few hundred ÂµV to few mV) and high-frequency (5kHz to 1MHz) input signals, especially acoustic emission (AE) signals generated from AE sensors. The device comprises mainly three parts, high pass filter, instrumentation amplifier, and low pass filter. A series of five passive low pass and a high pass filters are designed corresponding to the five different gains to pass the input signal with appropriate bandwidth and reduce the input signal noise. The five gains of the device are 10(20dB), 50(34dB), 100(20dB), 500(54dB) and 1000(60dB), designed for input voltage signals with the frequency bandwidth (5kHz - 1MHz), (5kHz - 800kHz), (5kHz - 500kHz), (5kHz - 200kHz) and (5kHz - 100kHz) respectively. The gain can be varied easily by using switches for the particular required gain and frequency band.
