Preparation of Compost from Animal Hair Waste (Process-based Technology)

Process has been developed for the preparation of compost using solid waste, hair.

During pre-tanning operations, about 50-70 kg of hair is produced from one ton of raw hides. A process has been developed for the preparation of compost using solid waste, hair. A suitable bacterial species has been identified for the degradation of hair waste, followed by compost manufacturing using keratin hydrolysate (a product of hair degradation). The whole process could be completed within 9-10 days. The process provides technological solutions to address the issue of solid waste on the one hand and provides scope for financial returns on the other.
