Title:

Process for Production of High Purity Magnesia

Value Proposition:

The present invention provides an improved process for the preparation of MgO of high purity >99% from salt bitterns.

Summary Application:

The proposed process involves reaction of MgCl2 rich brine obtained in course of recovering KCl from SEL in the integrated SOP process with liquid ammonia to precipitate magnesium hydroxide and subsequent calcination of the latter to produce high purity magnesia. The aqueous ammonium chloride stream is treated with lime to regenerate & recycle ammonia in magnesium hydroxide precipitated process.

Advantages:
  • Superior refractory properties at high temperature operations
  • Suitable for LD converter for primary steelmaking
  • High purity magnesia is suitable for extraction of Magnesium metal.
  • Effluent to comply with statutory norms.
  • Conservation of fresh water
