The present invention relates to the development of non-toxic and environmentally friendly rare-earth phosphate coatings for Mg alloys developed via sol-gel route. The  invention provides a single stage process for a rare-earth (La or Ce) phosphate sol synthesis using fewer number and lesser amount of chemicals and without any acids,  and a coating process specifically exemplified for magnesium alloys useful for engineering and biomedical applications.
