 Technology Profile

Title:

Technology for Production of Naphthoquinone Red Pigments from Adventitious roots of Arnebia euchroma

Value Proposition:

In vitro production of naphthoquinone red pigments eliminates dependency/ destruction
of natural plant population for raw material.

Summary Application:

Global market for dyes & pigments was estimated at USD 31 billion in 2015 and projected to reach USD 42 billion at a CAGR of 5.0% by year 2021. Annual demand of dried roots of ratanjot is about 200 metric ton (NMPB).

Advantages:
  1. No genetic transformation method used for induction of adventitious roots.
  2. Single-stage culture system i.e., both optimum growth and pigment production achieved in single medium.
  3. Bioreactor based production system for shorter cultivation cycle (28 days) as compared to over four years under field cultivation to get noticeable pigment yield in roots.
