Title:

Textile Reinforcement for Brick Masonry Structure Strengthening (Active and Passive)

Value Proposition:

The proposed strengthening methodology for load-bearing single-storey masonry structures is a combination of internal reinforcement and external strengthening using high-strain textiles called "Geo-grids" to enhance the structural integrity. The process commences with the construction of a new brick masonry course of required height (overall aspect ratio as per the IS 1905: 1987 to be followed), below the level of the existing super-structure, incorporating geogrid textile reinforcement in alternate bed joints when a new layer of masonry work required. This process is then followed by connecting the new wall to the existing upper old wall to ensure monolithic behaviour. A comprehensive condition assessment is then undertaken to identify and document existing cracks. The cracks are repaired using techniques like crack stitching and grouting. Subsequently, external Geo-grid/Hybrid textile strengthening is applied at critical locations—such as wall corners, around openings, and on both interior and exterior faces—with appropriate anchorage to ensure effective load transfer. The textile is covered with a polymer-modified cement–sand mortar, with appropriate mix ratio. As a result, the internal bed joint reinforcement and external textile layers integrate the new and existing wall sections, offers resistance to minor crack formation due to unexpected minor settlements, mitigating the formation and propagation of cracks, while the external strengthening simultaneously enhancing the in-plane and out-of-plane resistance of the structure respectively. Detailed procedure for the reinforcement/strengthening process is provided in the knowhow.

Summary Application:

Strengthening of masonry structure, providing structural integrity, repair and retrofitting of distressed masonry structure.
