Abstract: The present invention involves the preparation of a multi-layered high pressure leak- proof and thermal shock resistant coatings for Carbon-Carbon composites, which is used in kinetic heating applications, wherein the coatings were developed by brush coating or spray coating methods. The Carbon-Carbon composites are leading candidate materials for high temperature applications due to their low density, high strength and high temperature capabilities. However, the main challenge with C/C composites is the deterioration of the reinforced fibres in oxidative environments during high temperature exposure and addressing this problem is more demanding and intriguing one. The inventions related to impart both the high pressure leak-proof and thermal shock resistant coatings are sparse. Hence, to overcome the above drawbacks, the present invention is focused on the preparation of three-layer coating system in which the first layer (comprising of alumina, SiC with silicate binder) provides adhesion between the C/C composite and adjacent top layers, while the second layer (micron sized stabilized zirconia packing) provides leak-proof nature (sealing 6 bar pressure completely) and the top most layer (polycrystalline alumina wool with yttrium silicate and aluminosilicate based clay) is designed and formulated to provide thermal shock resistance during high temperature exposures around 25000.
